Sumburgh Head is an important nesting site for seabirds, including puffins. The light station serves as the headquarters of the Sumburgh Head Nature Reserve. The Royal Society for the Preservation of Birds also has its reserve headquarters in an assistant keeper’s cottage. The Shetland Amenity Trust provides overnight accommodations here. The Northern Lighthouse Board retains ownership and management of the lighthouse itself.
