This lighthouse was designed by engineer Robert Stevenson. This lighthouse and the higher tower (560 feet away) had problems with fog obscuring the lights. They were replaced by the Chicken Rock Lighthouse. When there was a fire at Chicken Rock in 1960, this lighthouse went back into temporary service.
