Name: Mississauga Point Lighthouse

Nearest Town or City:
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada

Location: Mouth of the Niagara River, Lake Ontario.

Notes:
This is the earliest recorded lighthouse on the Great Lakes, although there are indications that a lighted beacon was erected by the British in the 1780s, on a site near present-day Fort Niagara, in New York State, then part of British territory. Few details are available about the Mississauga Point Lighthouse. It was demolished in 1812 to make way for fortifications against invasion by the United States in the War of 1812. The lighthouse was not rebuilt after the war. (Thanks to Michel Forand.)
