This lighthouse was built to serve as an entrance light for the new River Nene cut when it opened in 1831, but it was never actually lit. Customs officials were housed here for some years. Later, the lighthouse was home to artist and ornithologist Sir Peter Scott during the 1930. It is believed that he served as the inspiration for Paul Gallico's book "The Snow Goose," which concerns an artist living in an abandoned lighthouse.
