Built in 1876, the Indian River Life-Saving Station is one of few life-saving facilities on the Atlantic Coast that still stands in its original location. The building served as a Coast Guard station from 1915 to 1962, when it was damaged by a severe storm and was decommissioned. In the 1990s, the Delaware Seashore Preservation Foundation began work to preserve the building as a museum, restoring it to its 1905 appearance and adding an impressive gift shop. Since 2004, it has been in the hands of Delaware State Parks, who conduct daily tours of the museum and host programs out of the station site. Follow Route 1 south from Dewey Beach. The station will be on your left, 3.6 miles south of Dewey Beach. Also located 1.5 miles north of the Indian River Inlet.
