Bell Island was home to thriving iron mines from the late 19th century until 1966. As of January 2003 this is still a staffed light station.

Directions:
From St. John's it's a 20-minute drive to the ferry terminal at Portugal Cove, then a 20-minute ferry ride to Bell Island. For ferry information call (709) 895–6931. The lighthouse is at the eastern point of Bell Island at the end of Lighthouse Road. There is a scenic hiking trail from the lighthouse.
