Crews hoisted the fully restored lantern room of the historic Clarks Point Lighthouse back into place atop historic Fort Taber this past April. The lighthouse and fort are located at the southernmost tip of the New Bedford, Massachusetts, a city rich in maritime history.
Restoration was carried out during the winter months inside the city’s wastewater treatment plant’s welding facility. City crews rebuilt the wood frame upper portion of the lighthouse in a manner of only a few weeks.
Graffiti removal continues at the lighthouse and the fort using a combination of compressed air and bicarbonate of soda. The restoration was funded in part by Nstar.
Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz, Jr. immediately announced that the city would hold a relighting ceremony at the lighthouse. The ceremony, to be held June 15 at 7:00 p.m., will include a seaside pops concert by the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, a special postal cancellation. Various government speakers have been invited to speak with the keynote address to be given by Capt. Gerald M. Davis, Chief of Staff, First Coast Guard District in Boston.
The public is invited to attend this historic event.
