Cape Reinga Lighthouse began as one of the most isolated lighthouses in New Zealand. From 1878 until 1941 it was located on Motuopo Island, about 5 kilometers southwest of Cape Reinga.

In 1941 a new tower and houses for two keepers was completed on the mainland - on the most northerly point in New Zealand.

Cape Reinga is the point where according to Maori tradition, the spirits of the Maori are believed to take their final farewell from the land of the living.

The Lighthouse Tower is approximately 10 meters in height, and 165m above sea level. The Keepers were withdrawn in 1987.

It is estimated that nearly 80,000 people visit Cape Reinga annually, making it one of the most visited lighthouses in New Zealand.
