President George W. Bush waves to the crowd at ...

In a recent visit to Portland Maine, President Bush promoted his multi-million dollar plan to strengthen the security of America’s seaports and borders. Parts of that plan calls for the largest funding increase ever for the United States Coast Guard. While in Maine the President toured the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma and thanked the Coast Guard personnel for the work they have done and are doing. The emphasis was on Maine since, Maine has the longest border of any state bordering Canada and the state has thousands of miles of unguarded coastline. Portland Harbor is the busiest port in New England in terms of tonnage and the region’s second largest fishing port. Standing behind President Bush during most of his remarks were many Coast Guard personnel including Senior Chief Tom Dutton. Many of you may recall the historic photograph (July 2001 issue) of Dutton being one of the escorts of Connie Small, “The First Lady of Light” during her 100th birthday celebration sponsored by the American Lighthouse Foundation in June of 2001.
