A new and energetic group has formed the the area of south Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. The group is call HLPS (the Huron Lightstation Preservation Society) and will be associated with the Huronia Museum in Midland. The group was formed to help stop the deterioration of a number of lights; Hope Island, Brebeuf Island, Western Island, Midland Ranges, and Victoria Harbor. The main focus is on the sad state of Hope Island. The group was formed after the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association brought over 50 of their members to the Hope Island Light along with some locally interested people to help stabilize the light and cap off the top to prevent the elements of the bay from getting in and doing further damage. This was a great shot of adrenaline to get the group started. HLPS will be working closely with the Canadian Coast Guard and the First Nations who are in negotiations of ownership of the land. Everything looks positive. For more information on the group visit their website at www.hlps.ca or write to Larry Wright, Public Relations HLPS, Box 333, 20 King St, Cookstown, Ont. L0L 1L0, Canada.
