Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is accepting applications for a couple to live and work at the Au Sable Light Station near Grand Marais, MI. The positions entail operating a small information center/museum and providing tours of the 1874 station five days a week. The position may be filled by monthly terms in June, July, August and weekends in September or by one couple willing to stay the entire visitor season.

This is a remote location. Au Sable Light Station is located twelve miles west of Grand Marais, MI off county road H-58. Grand Marais is a small town of some 300-600 residents. The nearest service areas are Munising and Newberry (60 miles) and Marquette (100 miles). Persons volunteering for the light station duty must be in good physical condition and able to climb the 98 steps to the tower several times each day.

The positions are a result of recent renovations to the 1910 head keepers quarters. The second floor of the quarters have been developed as an efficiency apartment while a small information station, book store, and maritime museum has been installed on the first floor. The new facility is scheduled to open in June of 2003.

For the past decade the station assistant keeper’s quarters and light tower have been open to visitors during July and August when some 5,000 people tour the building with park ranger and volunteer guides. The new building will greatly add to visitors’ experience as the station will be open one additional month during the brief northern summer.

To apply for these positions, please send a resume to Volunteer Coordinator Gregg Bruff at P.O. Box 40, Munising, MI. 49862 or e-mail at gregg_bruff@nps.gov. Selections will be made by early March, 2003.
