Lighthouses of the Old West

For those of you that know me, you know I’m real fan of westerns and the old west. Granted, my number one hobby is lighthouses, but we all need to have another interest to keep us well rounded. And mine is the old west. In fact I have hundreds of old western TV shows on videotape, every Lone Ranger episode ever made, and numerous books and photographs.

However, over the last ten years, I must admit, lighthouses have really taken over and the Westerns hobby has taken a back seat.

Proving once again that you can learn more about American history studying lighthouses and lighthouses seem to turn up everywhere is evident by this 1973 issue of Real West Magazine. There are four stories featured on the cover. Right there along with one titled “The Original Singing Cowboy-John Wayne” is one titled “Famous Lighthouses of the Old West.”

The story covers nine pages of text and photos, which, considering the magazine is 82 pages, is a lot of coverage for this type of publication. The story goes into excellent detail coving stories about Mile Rocks, New Point Loma, Tillamook Rock, and Cape Spencer Lighthouses, all of which are naturally on the west coast.

So, the next time you’re in an antique store looking for lighthouse stuff you might try looking in the not-so-obvious places. You never know what you might find.
