In the archives of the American Lighthouse Foundation is this original ACME Newspicture photo with the following banner “LAND HO!” and the following caption:
St Augustine, FLA - Focus your glass on this beach beauty ‘neath the towering barber pole lighthouse on Anastasia Island. Miss Martha Fox is having her suit for 1940 designed to resemble the colorful beacon, setting a unique fashion note at this popular winter resort. Her designer is Celeste Pomar.
The photo is dated January 2, 1940. Perhaps it was part of a promotion for a local or national beauty pageant or just a promotion of some type for the bathing suit designer. Maybe the photographer for ACME was at the lighthouse just taking photographs to promote wintering in Florida and decided to submit this one. Whatever the reason is, we don’t know, nor do we know anything about Martha Fox or Celeste Pomar. Perhaps one of our readers will be able to shed some light on this photograph taken over 60 years ago at Florida’s St. Augustine Lighthouse.
