As lighthouses continue to grow in popularity more and more people are getting married at lighthouses. Although the lighthouse was certainly the perfect site for their wedding, the marriage of Joseph Gordon Badour Sutherland and Terry Lynn Hamilton at Ontario Canada's Port Burwell Lighthouse was a continuing saga of the Sutherland family's legacy to the historic beacon.

The Sutherland name is synonymous with the lighthouse itself. Five generations of the Sutherland family, surpassing 100 years, were the keepers of this old lighthouse that has a deep meaning to the maritime culture of Port Burwell.

Naturally, as with every wedding, there were wedding guests, but this marriage ceremony also drew as many onlookers and the media. The Marine Museum across the street from the lighthouse even made up a special exhibit commemorating the Sutherland legacy to the lighthouse.

One of the Sutherland's, John, was keeper here for 40 years and received special recognitions for his service from two kings, King George V and King George VI.

It was quite a day for the Sutherland and Hamilton families as well as Port Burwell. We congratulate the newlyweds and wish them the very best.
