As a follow up to its highly successful six-hour mini series, "Legendary Lighthouses," PBS-TV will air a new presentation called, "Staying at a Lighthouse," about lighthouses you can spend the night at.
This "pledge special" will present the most sought after lighthouse experience anyone could want - spending the night at an old lighthouse.
Although lighthouses dot the coastline of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and all of our Great Lakes, there are only a handful of them where you can really step back in time by spending the night. There is simply no other lighthouse experience that comes close to it.
The experiences vary. A few of the overnight lighthouse are luxurious bed and breakfast inns, while others provide a more rustic experience. Some offer splendid isolation from daily life. However, what they all offer is an experience that is unique, romantic, renewing and memorable.
"The type of experience that people have here usually takes them by surprise," notes Jeffrey Burke, inn keeper at the Isle au Haut Lighthouse in Maine. "Strange things happen to people while they're here," he says. "They make career altering decisions, they propose to their sweethearts, they decide they're going to leave the city, or they're going to embark on some new adventure that they never thought they would do."
The production style of "Staying at a Lighthouse" is intimate and personal. The program will draw viewers in with the special connection that only a place like a lighthouse can create.
The film highlights the romanticism of these historic places, which are located on the most beautiful spots in the United States. It features compelling characters and storytellers, from the actual people who operate the lighthouses.
Lighthouses that will be featured are, Heceta Head Lighthouse in Yachats, Oregon; Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island; The Keepers House at Robinson Point Light, Isle au Haut, Maine; East Brother Lighthouse, San Francisco, CA; Saugerties Lighthouse, Saugerties, NY; Sand Hills Lighthouse in Ahmeek, Michigan; and Monomoy Point and Race Point Lights both on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
