Apostle Island Lighthouse Celebration Extended

Because of the extraordinary popularity, the Fourth Annual Apostle Islands Lighthouse Celebration in Bayfield Wisconsin has been extended to three weeks in September of 1999. Beginning, September 8, the celebration will feature varied boat schedules throughout the three weeks in an effort to accommodate as many lighthouse aficionados as possible to visit all of the Apostle Islands Lighthouses.

Special features of the Lighthouse Celebration are landings at the Apostle Islands Lighthouses, perhaps the most maintained group of lightstations in the United States. National Park Service personnel will give historic insight into the period from 1857 to the end of the manned lighthouse era in 1978.

National Park Service historians will speak on lightkeepers lives, on featured cruises, tour boat captains will speak of characteristics of this bygone era, and special guests aboard an 1870's three-masted schooner will sail into Chequamegon Bay along the route historically taken into what was once the second busiest seaport on the Great Lakes. Lake Superior balladeers, including Big Top Chautauqua musicians and Lee Murdock, will entertain the visitors. Lee Radzak, site manager for Split Rock Lighthouse, will be the featured speaker at a Keepers Dinner.
