Located offshore in Lake Huron, the lighthouse at Harbor Beach, Michigan, has been determined to be excess to the needs of the federal government. Therefore, pursuant to the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, 16 U.S.C. 470, this property is being made available at no cost to other federal agencies, state and local agencies, non-profit corporations, educational agencies, and community development organizations, for education, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes.

Built in 1885, the conical cast iron lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property sits on State of Michigan-owned public trust bottomlands, which means the property steward will be required to obtain a permit from the state. Harbor Beach Lighthouse is one of over one-hundred and twenty historic lighthouses and light stations along Michigan’s shoreline and mainland. Two-thirds of these properties are currently under federal ownership and scheduled for disposal. To locate suitable stewards to maintain and operate these facilities for the benefit of the public, the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office and Michigan Historic Preservation Network established the Michigan Lighthouse Project in 1998.

Any eligible entity with an interest in acquiring the Harbor Beach Lighthouse should download the official notice and fact sheet from http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/nhlpa/nhlpa.htm. The notice and fact sheet can also be obtained by calling 1-800-472-1313. Eligible entities have 60 days to respond to the notice after it is officially announced.

For more information on the disposal of lighthouses, please visit the following web sites: http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/nhlpa/nhlpa.htm.
