Irondequoit Lighthouse Trail

On the heels of Portland, Maine's "Lighthouses on Parade" in 2003, Irondequoit, New York has unveiled the "Irondequoit Lighthouse Trail" for 2004. Lighthouses standing ten feet tall, decorated by local artists and sponsored by local companies, have been placed in 15 locations around the community as the Irondequoit Chamber of the Greater Rochester Business Alliance seeks to make the Town of Irondequoit a preferred destination of choice for area residents and tourists.

The Irondequoit Lighthouse Trail has been developed by the Irondequoit Chamber in conjunction with Out Front Productions, the same company that worked on Lighthouses on Parade in Maine. This project differs from others as these works of lighthouse art will not be auctioned off to benefit local charities, but will remain in place on the trail for five to ten years as a tourist attraction. The locations are spread in and around this Rochester suburb, including near the dock for the new fast ferry The Breeze that is starting service between Toronto, Canada and Rochester, New York.

An Iroquois word meaning, "where the land and waters meet," Irondequoit provides a perfect setting for the lighthouse trail. This charming town is literally surrounded by three great waterways-the shores of Lake Ontario define its northern border; the Genesee River marks its western border; and Irondequoit Bay delineates its eastern border. Oh yes, while you are in the area, don't forget that you can see a real lighthouse, the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse, near Ontario Beach Park by the Genesee River, just minutes north of Rochester.
