PETA Says It Wants Lights

PETA, (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has sent our a number of press releases saying that they have sent letters of interest for the possibility of applying for ownership of a number of lighthouses now being offered though the General Services Administration under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Among the lighthouses they have sent out press releases about include, Cleveland Ledge Light in Massachusetts, Whaleback Lighthouse in Maine, Penfield Reef Light in Connecticut and others.

Old Saybrook To Be Excessed

Connecticut's Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, the one that appears on the state's license plate, is being declared excess property under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Early reports are that the town of Old Saybrook wants town the 1886 structure.

Renovations At St. Mary's

The 109-year old St. Mary's Lighthouse on Whitley Bay on the northeast coast of England is undergoing over $250,000.00 in repairs. The lighthouse went out of service in 1894 and the local community took over ownership of the beacon that is popular with tourists. Interestingly, we have a beautiful framed print of an antique advertising poster featuring the lighthouse hanging in our office.

Biggy To Do Book

David Biggy who published the 2006 Benevolent Beacons Calendar has announced that he has signed a contract to publish a book about east coast lighthouses of the east coast. The book is expected to be hardcover with about 140-page with numerous photographs and a plug for lighthouse preservation.

Biggy generously donated some of the proceeds of his calendar to lighthouse groups such as the American Lighthouse Foundation.

The new book is expected to be on bookshelves by 2009.

Dutch Island Restoration

Rhode Island's Dutch Island Lighthouse is being restored thanks to the efforts of the dedicated volunteers of the Dutch Island Lighthouse Society (DILS), a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Abcore Construction Company, which is a veteran of lighthouse preservation projects at other Rhode Island lighthouses such as Plum Beach and Pomham Rocks, will do the restoration work. However the lighthouse group is still slightly short on the funds needed to pay the bills and hope that final donations will help them reach their mark. Donations can be sent to DILS, P.O. Box 435, Saunderstown, RI 02874.

Rockland Bricks For Sale

The Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland is going to build a new lobster cooker in the shape of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse and they are selling bricks to help cover the cost, Bricks are $50.00 each and can be ordered on line at www.Mainelobsterfestival.com.

Coast Guard Milestone

The United States Coast Guard recently announced that they had saved over one million lives since the organization was founded. The Coast Guard's roots date back 1790 and they are one of the five armed services protecting America.

Thieves Donate To Charities

It seems that crooks are now making small on-line donations to charities while they try to verify that a stolen credit card is still active before going on a serious spending spree. Hopefully, the government will make a more concerned effort to put these people behind bars where they belong.

Montauk Light Closer to Being Saved

Long Island, New York's, Montauk Lighthouse is closer to being saved thanks to the approval of $7 million in federal money for a rock revetment project that will cost $14 million and that will eventually prevent the lighthouse from toppling off the bluff that it rests on. The project is now in the engineering stage. Moving the lighthouse was one of the options that was considered to save it but was rejected for a number of reasons, including the fear that the lighthouse constructed of sandstone would crumble during the move. It's now up to the state and nonprofits to raise the remaining $7 million dollars needed to fund the project.
