Fall River - Lighthouses, lightships, Old Ironsides and the Fall River Steamship Line will be the featured topics at a Southeast Maritime Symposium today.
Four guest speakers who are specialists in their respective fields will present talks at the symposium to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the theater at the Fall River State Park, Battleship Cove.
“Hopefully, if this proves to be a success, it will become an annual event,” said Philip J. Roderick, chairman of event sponsor Marine Museum of Fall River Inc.
“Doug Bingham, one of our volunteer trustees at the museum, has put this all together,” said Mr. Roderick. “It’s basically been a labor of love on his part.”
Scheduled to speak are:
· Timothy Harrison, a founder and chairman of the American Lighthouse Federation, who will talk about “Preservation of Our Endangered Lighthouses.”
· Capt. Eric Takakjian, a licensed sea captain and master diver, who will talk about the “Discovery of the Nantucket Lightship LV117.”
· Marguerite Desy, curator of the USS Constitution, who will discuss the “Restoration of Old Ironsides.”
· Dr. Edwin Dunbaugh, of Hofstra University and a historian with the Marine Museum of “The Fall River Steamship Line.”
Mr. Harrison and Dr. Dunbaugh, who have written books about lighthouses and the Fall River Line, will have book signings at 10:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., respectively.
There is a $45 fee for the symposium that covers registration, a lunch and two coffee breaks catered by Waterstreet Café, entrance fees to the symposium, and an admission pass to the Marine Museum.
Gift bags will be provided by the Marine Museum and Lighthouse Depot of Wells, Maine, and door prizes will be provided by Nancy and Bill Younger and Harbour Lighths of El Cajon, Calif.
