Magazine Seeks Lighthouse Info

Story ran on: March 26, 1996

From the: Newport Daily Express, Newport VT

What happened to the lake's lighthouse history?

That's the question being asked by the folks at Lighthouse Digest, a Maine based, international magazine devoted to stories about lighthouses and their history.

According to Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest, Lake Memphremagog had a number of lighthouses at one time. The magazine wants to do an in-depth story on the lake's lighthouses for a future issue of the magazine, but the problem is they're having a hard time finding any information on them.

Harrison said there were three primary U.S. Government Lighthouses on the lake, those being Maxfield Point Lighthouse, Newport Wharf Lighthouse, and Whipple Point Lighthouse. Other lighthouses on the lake, Harrison said, were believed to be Canadian but he was not sure. These lighthouses were; Magog Light, White Shoal Light, Black Point Light, Wadleigh Light, Georgeville Light, Molson Island Light, and Lead Mines Light.

Harrison said they have located an old photograph of the Maxfield Lighthouse, an old photo of the Whipple Point Light, and some sketchy information on Maxfield Light, but they need much more. "What we are looking for," Harrison said, "is old photographs of Keepers and family members that maintained the lighthouses, old newspaper clippings, recorded memories of keepers, historical information and just about anything else we can find. More than likely there are some people that live in the area that this type of information in a trunk in the attic. We figure that there must be some people that live around the lake that are descendents of keepers of the lights or descendents of lamp lighters that have some old photos in the family Bible or photo albums that they could share with us." Harrison said they also want to know what happened to the lighthouses and if any of them are still standing today.

Harrison said that original photographs and articles could be sent to them by certified mail and they would duplicate them and return the originals or Lighthouse Digest would pay to have original photographs duplicated locally.

If anybody has any information they would like to share they can write to Tim Harrison, Lighthouse Digest, P. O. Box 1690, Wells, Maine 04090 or call them toll free at 1-800-668-7737.
