Lighthouse history is filled with fascinating twists and turns, but the story of "Lost Light" Frank's Island is perhaps the most bizarre. One of Louisiana's earliest lighthouses, it was built to guide ships into the Mississippi River. Approved by Thomas Jefferson's administration for $85,000, Frank's Island Light was the most expensive and elaborate lighthouse built at that time in America. More than a million bricks, 200 tons of stone, and 800 tons of timber were used. It even had a fancy marble staircase. Finished in 1818, it was so heavy it began to sink immediately. Within days of completion, the walls tilted, masonry cracked and the lighthouse fell to pieces, swallowed up by mud and alligators! Begin your collection with this wonderful replica and recapture a part of our vanishing past. # 53664
