Honoring the newest and most powerful beacon of all American Lighthouses, the beam from Oak Island Lighthouse is the second most powerful in the world surpassed only by a lighthouse off the coast of France. Built in the 1950’s to replace the famous Cape Fear Lighthouse, this concrete tower never needs painting since the paint was mixed into the wet concrete. The weight of the 169-foot tall tower is supported by an additional 129 feet of concrete below the earth’s surface. In winds up to 60 mph the tower sways as much as three feet. Because of the intense heat generated by the light, personnel must wear protective clothing when servicing the light.
